Dolby Atmos and surround sound formats, decoded
Dolby Atmos is not a codec, and it does not compete with Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD. It is a layer of positional metadata carried inside one of those two codecs, which is why a disc can be labeled "Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos" without contradicting itself. Dolby's own soundbar white paper says so in one line: "Dolby Atmos object-based audio can be delivered via Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD audio codecs." Most other home audio confusion, including the X.Y.Z numbers and bars advertising height with no height drivers, follows from that.
Channels are speaker feeds, objects are coordinates
Channel-based surround (Dolby Digital, DTS, a plain 5.1 or 7.1 TrueHD track) treats each channel as a fixed feed for a speaker in a fixed position. Whoever mixed the film decided how much of a passing helicopter goes to the left surround versus the right, and that decision is baked into the file. Play a 7.1 track on a 5.1 system and the receiver downmixes, folding channels together.
Object-based audio stores that helicopter as a discrete audio element plus metadata describing where it belongs in the room. A renderer in your receiver, soundbar or TV maps that position onto whatever speakers are present. The same bitstream produces different speaker feeds on a 5.1.2 rig than on a 7.1.4 rig, with no downmix stage guessing at the mixer's intent.
Atmos is a hybrid of the two. Dolby's cinema page describes packaging "up to 128 audio tracks", specifically "a 9.1 bed and up to 118 audio objects", allowing "up to 64 discrete speaker feeds" in a theater. The bed carries score and ambience that has no reason to move. Objects carry the things that do. Home decoders get the same structure and scale it to your layout; Dolby documents home systems from eight to 34 speakers.
Reading the X.Y.Z notation
Dolby's speaker setup guide is blunt. "The first number tells you the number of standard ear-level speakers." "The second number, after the dot, indicates the number of subwoofers." "The third number, if there is one, is the number of height speakers for Dolby Atmos."
So 5.1 is five ear-level speakers and one subwoofer. 5.1.2 adds two height speakers. 7.1.4 is seven ear-level, one subwoofer, four height. Dolby describes those height speakers as either "installed in the ceiling of the listening space" or as "upward-firing speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling".
One widely repeated claim does not survive contact with Dolby's documents: that 5.1.2 is the Atmos minimum. The setup guide names no minimum. It lists 5.1.2 as the smallest layout it covers for separates, while the soundbar white paper describes upward-firing bars starting "at a minimum configuration of 2.0.2".
The third number is the one to read first on a product page. No third number means no physical height reproduction, whatever the logo says.
What actually carries the metadata
Two carriers, split by delivery method. For physical media it is Dolby TrueHD, a lossless codec in the Meridian Lossless Packing lineage, running 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz at up to 24 bits and up to 18 Mbps on Blu-ray Disc. Dolby did not build a new lossless format for Atmos. It added a fourth substream to TrueHD, described as "a losslessly encoded, fully object-based mix". Streaming uses Dolby Digital Plus, also called Enhanced AC-3 or E-AC-3: lossy, 0.032 to 6.144 Mbit/s, up to 15 full-bandwidth channels.
Both carriers are backward compatible. A decoder that knows nothing about Atmos sees an ordinary TrueHD or DD+ stream and plays 5.1 or 7.1. That is why no separate "Atmos track" waits in a disc menu. If the disc plays, you have the right stream already. Hearing objects depends on the decoder.
One older claim you can stop repeating. The last E-AC-3 patent, US7516064, carried an adjusted expiration date of January 30, 2026, which Phoronix reported the next day from Google Patents records. Articles calling DD+ patent-encumbered for open-source decoders describe a situation that has lapsed.
DTS:X and where it stands
DTS:X is DTS's object-based platform, built on its Multi-Dimensional Audio work, and it has the same relationship to its carriers that Atmos does. It rides inside a DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream, which tops out at 24.5 Mbit/s instantaneous and stores eight discrete channels at 24-bit/192 kHz, dropping to 96 kHz for 6.1 and 7.1. A lower-bandwidth DTS Digital Surround stream can carry it too.
DTS's own site states that DTS:X "supports decode and playback from streaming with up to 5.1.4 decode" and "from optical disc with up to 7.1.4 decode", with a separate DTS Neural:X upmixer that "adds support for up to 32 speakers (30.2)". DTS:X Pro is a distinct higher tier, not a marketing suffix: Denon's AVR-X3800H spec sheet records DTS:X as supported and DTS:X Pro as not.
DTS and Xperi market DTS:X as not being object-limited the way the Atmos cinema spec is. No current DTS document puts a number on that, so treat "unlimited objects" as marketing. The counter-figure of nine simultaneous objects is no better: it traces to a 2006 white paper, nine years before DTS:X existed.

The format race is effectively over on disc
FlatpanelsHD ran its UHD Blu-ray release database in June 2025 and counted 616 titles with Dolby Atmos, 113 with DTS:X and one with Auro-3D, most DTS:X titles dating from 2019 or earlier. New DTS:X discs have stayed rare. The format has not left hardware, though: Denon's AVR-X3800H lists Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Auro-3D, IMAX Enhanced and 360 Reality Audio on one spec sheet.
Streaming is less lopsided. Disney+ began carrying DTS:X through the IMAX Enhanced program on May 15, 2024, starting with the concert film Queen Rock Montreal alongside 18 Marvel titles, and DTS's director of product management Sven Mevissen called DTS:X "the exclusive audio format that is used in the IMAX Enhanced program". Apple puts Spatial Audio inside the standard individual Apple Music plan, and its delivery rules for labels are strict: "Upmixing from a stereo release is not allowed", nor is "de-mixing" stems out of one.
So do not pay extra for DTS:X. Buy on other merits and take it as a bonus, since it is bundled on almost everything above entry level.
A fourth name is now worth knowing. Eclipsa Audio is a royalty-free spatial format built on the open IAMF specification from the Alliance for Open Media. Google announced in January 2025 that creators could upload Eclipsa tracks to YouTube that year and that Samsung was "integrating the technology across its 2025 TV lineup". Forbes reported in November 2025 that a second generation would add object-based positioning and push past the original 28-channel ceiling, with no stated maximum or ship date. The "three formats" framing in older articles no longer holds.
What a virtual height soundbar is doing
Dolby permits Atmos branding on soundbars with no upward-firing drivers at all. Its documentation describes height virtualization that applies "carefully designed height-cue filters to overhead audio components before they are mixed into listener-level speakers", and says the virtualizer runs on "2 to 7 listener-level channels to create the sensation of either 2 or 4 overhead speakers". That is real certification, not a counterfeit logo. What it cannot do is aim sound at your ceiling.
Two tells. Read the third number, then the driver breakdown. A bar sold as "Dolby Atmos, 3.1ch" has three ear-level drivers, one subwoofer and no height drivers, so every overhead cue is simulated.
Buy upward-firing and the room starts to matter in ways the box does not mention. Dolby puts the ideal ceiling height at 7.5 to 12 feet (2.3 to 3.7 meters), says the effect holds to 14 feet, and warns that acoustic ceiling tiles absorb the overhead sound. A popcorn finish is fine. Acoustic tile is not.
Prices set the expectation. The Sonos Arc Ultra lists at $999 in the US, with matching 999 figures in euros and pounds, and Sonos claims a 9.1.4 Atmos render from 14 drivers. That is a rendering claim, not a count of height drivers. Samsung's current flagship, the 11.1.4-channel HW-Q990H, is $1,999.99 on Samsung's US site, where the copy leads on Dolby Atmos and never mentions DTS:X or Eclipsa. Headphones invert the economics: the current Xbox Wireless Headset ships with Atmos included at $109.99, where the previous model needed a separate purchase through the Dolby Access app.
The connection is usually the actual problem
If Atmos will not light up, suspect the cable path before the settings. HDMI.org gives eARC "a maximum audio bandwidth of 37 Mbits/second" and lists DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos among the formats it carries, plus 32-channel uncompressed audio at up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Plain ARC is reported at around 1 Mbit/s. That gap is the difference between legacy compressed 5.1 and guaranteed lossless or object-based passthrough. eARC arrived with HDMI 2.1 and is still listed among current HDMI 2.2 features.
Legacy optical (TOSLINK) cannot carry Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio or uncompressed multichannel PCM at all. Its behavior with lossy DD+ Atmos is reported inconsistently enough that optical is best treated as unsuitable rather than merely limited.
Three things to check, in order. Use the HDMI port physically labeled ARC or eARC, because an unlabeled port will not return audio to a receiver or bar. Check the source path, since a player wired straight into the receiver bypasses the TV's audio handling entirely. Then set the source to bitstream output rather than PCM, which is what Dolby instructs for Blu-ray players, and switch off secondary audio or "mix" mode. Dolby notes that many players default to that mode, which outputs a channel-based signal and strips the object metadata before it reaches your decoder.
