Soundbar or AV receiver: which one you actually need

Buy the soundbar unless you already own speakers, need to switch more HDMI sources than your TV has inputs for, or want surround and height channels coming out of physically separate boxes. An AV receiver is a source switcher and a multichannel amplifier before it is anything else, and spending anywhere from €679 to €3,700 on one before you have bought a single speaker only makes sense if you plan to use both of those jobs.

What a receiver sells that a bar cannot fake

Discrete amplification is the whole argument. Denon's AVC-X3800H, €1,800 on Denon's German storefront, processes 9.4 channels and carries nine discrete power amplifiers rated 105 watts per channel into 8 ohms. Multichannel preamp outputs take it to 11.4 channels, and it has four independent subwoofer outputs. Move up to the AVC-X6800H at €3,700 and you get 11.4 channels at 140 watts each from eleven discrete amplifiers, preamp outs to 13.4, four independent sub outs again, and decoding for Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, IMAX Enhanced and Auro-3D. Each amplified channel drives a speaker you position yourself.

The bottom of that range is thinner than the price alone suggests. The €679 AVR-S670H is a 5.2-channel receiver at 75 watts per channel, which means no height channels at all: five ear-level speakers plus two subwoofer outputs. The step up to seven amplified channels starts at the €839 AVR-X1800H.

Only the top two models sell channels they do not amplify, which is what makes the preamp output count the number to read before you buy.

Bose's Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar is $1,099, the most expensive of the four soundbars Bose lists and the one above the $999 Smart Ultra Soundbar. Its spec line reads "5.1.2 Speakers, Surround Sound Configuration (Optional Accessory)", and that parenthesis is doing work. Bose's page says the bar supports "true 7.1.4-channel audio and Dolby Atmos decoding" only "when paired with compatible surround speakers and subwoofers", and the matching Lifestyle Ultra Subwoofer is sold separately. The .1 is a separate purchase. So are the speakers that turn the 5 into a 7.

Samsung lists its HW-Q990F as an 11.1.4 channel system, more speaker positions than the €3,700 Denon flagship processes, though Samsung published no price or driver breakdown on the pages reachable for this article. Take that as a caution about comparing the numbers directly. A receiver's channel count tells you how many amplifier outputs physically exist. A bar's tells you how many positions it renders, which is a different quantity produced by a much smaller number of drivers plus processing.

The cable is not the bottleneck

eARC gets blamed for limitations it does not have. The HDMI Forum's eARC page states support for high-bitrate audio up to 192 kHz and 24-bit, uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1, and 32-channel uncompressed audio, and separately lists DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos. A soundbar on eARC can receive a lossless object-based stream. What it does with that stream afterward is limited by how many drivers sit inside the enclosure, not by the wire.

Two cautions about that connection. First, a specific eARC bandwidth figure in megabits circulates widely on enthusiast sites, but the HDMI Forum's eARC page publishes no bandwidth number at all, neither Mbps nor Gbps, so judge a connection by the format list it supports rather than by a figure someone quoted at you. Second, the version history is muddled. That same page reads, verbatim, "HDMI 2.2 features Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) which is an advancement over the previous Audio Return Channel (ARC)", yet eARC already ships on every receiver checked for this article, none of which claims video beyond 8K/60 and 4K/120. Do not shop by spec version number for audio return. Look for the word eARC printed next to the port.

Who does the switching

This is the architectural difference people discover after the box is open. With a receiver, your sources plug into the receiver and one cable carries video onward to the TV. Denon's AVR-S670H has six HDMI inputs and one output; the AVR-X1800H also six in and one out; the AVR-X2800H six in and two out; the AVC-X3800H six in and three out; the AVC-X6800H seven in and three out. Yamaha's RX-V6A is specified as seven in and one out. Not all inputs are equal. Denon lists three of the six as 8K-capable on the S670H, X1800H and X2800H, while every input is 8K-capable on the X3800H and X6800H, and Yamaha specs the RX-V6A as "4K120AB and 8K60B", a port-group shorthand rather than a promise that every socket does everything.

With a soundbar and eARC, the TV is the switcher. Bose's page says the Lifestyle Ultra Soundbar connects to the TV over HDMI eARC, and lists no source-facing HDMI inputs on the bar itself. Your console, streamer and disc player all connect to the TV, and audio comes back down one cable.

The middle box is the one doing the switching. The Bose bar's only HDMI connection is the one running to the TV, so nothing else can be plugged into the bar at all.

That has two practical consequences. Your TV's input count becomes the ceiling on how many devices you can connect, and your TV becomes the only device deciding what audio format reaches the bar. The first failure is structural rather than occasional: ARC and eARC run on one designated HDMI port, so a cable in any other socket returns no audio to the bar at all. The second thing to check is your TV's digital audio output setting, which needs to pass the bitstream through rather than convert everything to PCM, because with a bar there is no receiver downstream to catch what the TV strips out.

Room correction is not the clean dividing line

The claim that soundbars have no room correction is out of date. Bose's page describes CustomTune as "built upon Bose ADAPTiQ audio calibration technology", so at the top of Bose's range the bar does measure the space it sits in.

What scales with receiver price is measurement sophistication, and Denon's own lineup documents the tiers. The AVR-S670H at €679 ships base Audyssey MultEQ with Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume. The AVR-X1800H (€839) and AVR-X2800H (€1,019) step up to MultEQ XT, which Denon's X1800H page describes as detailed analysis of the loudspeakers at up to eight positions, optimising each channel for frequency and time response. The AVC-X3800H and AVC-X6800H carry MultEQ XT32 and are both listed as prepared for a Dirac Live upgrade, sold separately. Yamaha's YPAO does the equivalent work, including a Reflected Sound Control mode that Yamaha says calibrates for any of eight listening positions.

The real gap is what there is to correct. A receiver measures separate speakers in separate physical locations and fixes the timing, level and frequency response of each one against your room. A single-box bar can only correct its own drivers. There is nothing discrete to align for side and rear channels because there are no separate side and rear speakers, and no calibration pass can invent the ten feet of air between a real surround speaker and the listening seat.

Denon figures come from its German storefront in euros and the Bose figure from its US store in dollars, so they are not directly convertible. Yamaha's product page listed no price at all.

What the sticker price leaves out

None of the Denon prices include a single speaker. That is the number most comparisons skip. A €679 receiver is not a €679 system, and by the time you have added five or seven speakers plus a subwoofer you are past the $1,099 Bose asks for its top bar. Push toward a discrete 7.1.4 Atmos package, which needs eleven speakers and a sub, and the speakers can cost more than the receiver driving them. No speaker-package pricing was verified for this article, so treat the direction as certain and the crossover point as yours to price.

The soundbar's sticker is closer to a finished system, though Bose's own page shows it is not always the whole bill either, since the subwoofer and surrounds are accessories. Price both routes as complete systems, then compare.

HDMI 2.2 is not a reason to wait

The HDMI Forum's most recent specification update reaches "Up to 96Gbps bandwidth", supports 4K240 and 8K60 both uncompressed and with full chroma and 10/12-bit colour, and extends to 10K, 12K and 16K. It needs the new Ultra96 cable, the only one the Forum says supports all HDMI 2.2 applications, and HDMI 2.2 "is backward compatible with earlier versions of the Specification". The older Ultra High Speed cable arrived with HDMI 2.1, reached the market in 2020, and tops out at 48 Gbps.

None of that is in a receiver you can buy today. Every model checked for this article, the whole Denon range above and Yamaha's RX-V6A, specifies 8K/60 and 4K/120 passthrough, with Denon quoting up to 40 Gbps on its €3,700 flagship. Not one of those product pages mentions 96 Gbps or an Ultra96 cable. Holding a purchase for HDMI 2.2 home theatre gear means waiting for products these lineups do not yet contain.

The specification to read before you sign

If you buy a receiver and are unsure how far you will take the system, the number worth reading is preamp output count rather than amplifier count. The AVC-X3800H amplifies nine channels but pre-outs eleven, and the AVC-X6800H amplifies eleven and pre-outs thirteen. That difference is your upgrade path, because you can add external amplification to the pre-outs later without replacing the processor. A soundbar's expansion stops at whatever accessories its manufacturer chooses to sell for it, which for the Bose is a subwoofer and a pair of surrounds.
