The TV picture settings that actually matter

Four controls decide how a TV looks in your room: picture mode, color temperature, sharpness, and, on any set with an LED backlight, local dimming. Pick Filmmaker Mode or Movie, leave the white point warm, and pull sharpness down until edge halos disappear. The factory default fights all three on purpose. It was tuned for a retail floor, where the bluest, most contrast-boosted image wins a two-second glance.

Picture mode changes everything downstream

Picture mode is not a filter laid over your other settings. It is a preset that loads a whole set of them at once: the white point target, the light output, and which processing blocks run. Change the mode and you have changed color temperature and sharpening together, so pick the mode first or you will tune sliders you are about to overwrite.

Samsung's support page, last updated 4 April 2026, describes Dynamic as "Enhances brightness and clarity, ideal for bright viewing environments," Movie as "Optimized for watching TV programs and movies in a dark room for a cinematic experience," and FILMMAKER MODE as "certified by the UHD Alliance, to preserve the director's creative vision." The list is not stable inside one brand. That page gives 2021-and-older sets Standard, Dynamic, Natural and Movie, with no Eco and no FILMMAKER MODE.

Filmmaker Mode is the only preset with a published, exact definition. The UHD Alliance specifies four processing changes: "Motion Smoothing/Interpolation: OFF", "Sharpening: OFF", "TV Noise Reduction: OFF", "Other image 'enhancement' processing: OFF". It maintains the source frame rate and aspect ratio, targets "White Point: D65", and applies overscan "Only if signaled with the image". It is not a look. It is the absence of looks.

Take Filmmaker Mode if the set has it, Movie or Cinema if it does not. The brands shown as supporters on filmmakermode.com are BenQ, LG, Philips, Vizio, Hisense, Panasonic and Samsung. Sony and TCL are absent from that page, which does not mean their sets lack an accurate preset, so check the model.

An accurate preset does look dim next to Dynamic in a sunlit room. Raise the light output control, whatever your manufacturer calls it, instead of switching modes, because a mode switch re-enables the processing and moves the white point.

D65 is a spectrum, not a number you can eyeball

Recommendation ITU-R BT.709-6, in force since June 2015, puts SDR reference white at D65. BT.2100-3 keeps it. Table 2 of that Recommendation lists reference white as "D65 per ISO 11664-2:2007" at chromaticity x=0.3127, y=0.3290, beside primaries described as monochromatic at 630, 532 and 467 nm. The correlated color temperature lands near 6504 K, which is where the round marketing number 6500K comes from.

That approximation matters. D65 is a defined spectral power distribution, so two lights that both read 6500K on a meter can have quite different spectra. A menu entry labeled 6500K is a claim about a target, not proof the target was hit.

HDR did not change the white point. BT.2100-3, approved 5 February 2025, carries D65 forward and replaces SDR gamma with the PQ and HLG transfer functions. One white point covers SDR and HDR, so the warmer preset is the right starting point for everything you watch.

Showroom modes run cooler and bluer than that reference. No vendor publishes the Kelvin value its Dynamic preset targets, so treat any specific figure quoted online as unsourced. The failure mode is behavioral: you switch to the accurate preset, decide it looks yellow, and switch back while your eyes are still adapted to the blue-shifted one. Judge it after a few evenings, on faces.

Room lighting is in the standard too. BT.2100-3 Table 3 puts the critical viewing environment at a neutral grey surround at D65, surround luminance of 5 cd/m2, and ambient light arranged to "Avoid light falling on the screen." That is why a lamp belongs behind the TV rather than beside it.

Sharpness sharpens edges, not detail

Samsung defines its Sharpness control as "Adjust the clarity of object outlines. Higher values, closer to 20, make outlines sharper." Outlines. Not resolution, not fine detail, outlines. The control finds high-contrast boundaries and lifts contrast right at the boundary, brightening one side and darkening the other. On a hard edge that reads as a halo or a visible double line, an artifact called ringing.

The source signal is a plain step: flat dark, a rise, flat bright. With sharpness raised, the trace leaves that step only around the boundary. Just before the edge it dips below the dark level, then it climbs far more steeply and shoots above the bright level before settling back. That undershoot and overshoot pair is the ringing you see as a dark trough and a bright halo hugging the edge. The flat areas either side are identical in both traces, which is why sharpening cannot add information the signal does not carry. White end credits on black are the easiest place to catch this, and the setting where the bright rim finally disappears is not always exactly 0.

Sharpening cannot add information the signal does not carry. A 4K stream on a 4K panel already holds all the resolution the display can render. Extra sharpening paints an outline over low-contrast texture such as skin and fabric, so you see the outline instead of the texture, and it amplifies compression noise. Filmmaker Mode switches sharpening off entirely.

Do not set it to zero on faith either. Reduce sharpness until the halo around a hard edge disappears, because the value where that happens is not always exactly 0. White end credits on black are the easiest real-world test pattern, followed by a power line against bright sky. A bright fringe hugging the dark side of the edge means the setting is still too high.

Local dimming only exists if there is a backlight

Samsung's wording again: "Local Dimming: Enhances contrast ratio by automatically adjusting brightness across different sections of the screen. Availability of this feature may vary by model and region." A contrast feature, not a detail feature, and plenty of models lack it.

Backlight zones behind sections of the LCD panel dim or brighten to approximate the per-pixel contrast the liquid crystal layer cannot deliver alone. Blooming is the cost: a bright object in a dark scene lights its whole zone, so a halo spreads into the surrounding black. More zones shrink the halo without removing it. Be skeptical of zone counts in reviews; manufacturers do not publish them for every model.

OLED has no backlight. Pixels emit their own light, so there is no local dimming control to configure. LG's 2026 flagship OLED evo sets run the Alpha 11 processor 4K Gen 3 with 12-bit image processing.

Backlight design is where 2026 actually moved. Sony's release of 27 May 2026 introduced the BRAVIA 9 II and BRAVIA 7 II with "RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro," independently driven red, green and blue LED elements in place of white LEDs behind a color filter. Sony published prices and no nit or zone figures, so anyone quoting those numbers is not quoting Sony. The 9 II runs $3,599.99 at 65 inches to $30,999.99 at 115 inches, the 7 II $1,599.99 at 50 inches to $8,999.99 at 98 inches. Samsung's rival Micro RGB line, an 85-inch R95H so far, publishes neither.

Buy the cheaper backlight tier unless you watch mostly in the dark, because ambient light bouncing off the panel swamps most of the black-level advantage you paid for.

HDR tone mapping, and why metadata argues with your picture mode

Tone mapping is what happens when content is mastered brighter than your panel can reproduce. With HDR10 the display gets one static curve for the whole program, so the compromise it picks for a bright daylight scene is the one it also applies to a night interior. Dolby's creator documentation describes its analysis as generating "three core metadata values for each shot that represent the minimum, average, and maximum luminance levels." HDR10+ carries its dynamic layer as SMPTE ST 2094-40, with "no per-device or per-unit royalties payable to the LLC for certification or use of the HDR10+ certification marks."

The nit numbers people repeat need context. PQ covers 0 to 10,000 nits at the specification level, and BT.2100-3 normalizes its reference PQ EOTF against that ceiling. Almost nothing is mastered near it. HDR10+ Technologies states that "Most professional HDR content today is mastered to 1,000 nits," and traces the stubborn 4,000 nit figure to a reference monitor of roughly that capability once standard at many studios. Dolby's Tier 1 reference display asks for peak "≥ 1,000 Nits", black "≤ 0.001 Nits" and intra-frame contrast "≥ 1,000,000:1". BT.2100-3 pins HDR Reference White, the signal off a 100% reflectance white card, at a nominal 203 cd/m2. Four-figure numbers are highlight headroom, not the brightness of the picture.

Where the HDR nit numbers sit on the range PQ defines Three bars on one shared scale, each drawn inside a track that represents the full 0 to 10,000 nit range PQ covers at the specification level. HDR Reference White, the signal off a white card, is a nominal 203 cd/m2 in BT.2100-3 and fills a fiftieth of the track. Most professional HDR content is mastered to 1,000 nits, a tenth of the track. The stubborn 4,000 nit figure, traced to a reference monitor once standard in studios, reaches two fifths. Nothing comes near the ceiling, which is the point: the four-figure numbers describe highlight headroom rather than the brightness of the picture. All three bars share one scale. Tone mapping only ever negotiates the top of this scale, the part of the master that sits above what the panel can reproduce.

This is where picture mode comes back. Dynamic metadata tells the display how to map luminance, and a showroom preset that applies its own punchier fixed curve overwrites that instruction. Check the mode again while HDR is actually playing. The one you picked on an SDR signal is not necessarily the one that applies after the source switches.

The 2026 wrinkle in "just pick Filmmaker Mode"

On 20 July 2026 LG announced Creator Original Picture Mode, exclusive to the 2026 OLED evo W6, G6 and C6 series and launched alongside Prime Video's "Masters of the Universe." It inverts the Filmmaker Mode idea. Instead of disabling processing, it lets the studio author "shadow detail, color balance, noise reduction and motion handling" for one title. Studio-authored is not vendor-authored, so this is no return to the showroom look, but the generic accurate preset is no longer the last word on those three models.

Formats move too. HDR10+ Technologies says Prime Video became the first streaming service to launch HDR10+ ADVANCED in 2026, on supported Samsung displays. Dolby Vision 2 exists, and Dolby sells it as automatic: "There's nothing to set up and nothing to manage." Dolby does not publish its sub-feature names or which 2026 sets ship it, so do not let a retailer's feature bullet stand in for a spec sheet.

If a shop demo is your only comparison between two sets, ask for both to be switched to Filmmaker Mode or Movie first. Both will look dimmer, and the ranking between them frequently changes once the showroom processing is out of the way.
